A Look At Air Beds: Features From the Editors
SYMBOL MATTRESS
Symbol Mattress’ Comfort 4U collection is a three bed series that features a personalized comfort system to better conform to the body at the touch of a button.
Each Comfort 4U mattress features four zones with six air chambers that can be adjusted separately, allowing the sleeper to change their level of comfort without disturbing their partner. The six adjustable chambers offer 65 unique settings at the head and the foot of the mattress and 65 additional settings for the lumbar chamber. In total, there are 4,225 comfort settings available per side. The collection’s retail price ranges from $2,299 to $3,499 and is available in Memory Foam, Latex or Gel models. Each mattress offers varying layers of convoluted super soft foam, gel memory foam and latex to increase air circulation, regulate sleep temperature, and provide superior pressure relief and support. The foam encased perimeter support extends and enhances the comfort to edge of the best, providing a wider sleep surface.
TEMPUR-PEDIC
Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Choice collection offers the brand’s famous pressure-relieving comfort combined with adjustable, personalized comfort on each side of the bed. Unveiled at the summer Las Vegas Market, the collection puts the “comfort and control in the hands of consumers, so they can create their own perfect sleep environment,” explained Chief Operating Office Tim Yaggi. Two hand-held remotes allow each sleeper to uniquely modify his or her side of the bed to achieve their own level of softness or firmness while the dedicated Lumbar Zone control allows each sleeper to separately adjust the feel under their lower back. Retailing from $3,499 to $3,999 in queen, the TEMPUR-Choice collection is available in a 13-inch Supreme or 14-inch Luxe model. Each remote controls more than 120 comfort settings and boasts a built-in memory button for one-touch recall of a user’s favorite setting.
BOYD SPECIALTY SLEEP
Known for its proprietary air bed designs and occasional-use air bed models, Boyd Specialty Sleep recently introduced a new Thomasville Synchrony air bed collection.
The seven-model series retails from $1,399 to $3,999 and includes four two-chamber core models and three beds with six-chamber cores. All cores are made from an eco-friendly, thermo polyurethane material that’s stronger and more durable than rubber. Comfort materials, which feature Boyd’s patented edge support, include varying layers of gel memory foams, memory foams and high-density poly foams. Each bed is equipped with an LCD hand-held control that activates an auto-fill feature with memory, enabling sleepers to program their desired firmness and then rely on the technology to “remember” their preferred setting.
“This line resonates well with affluent consumers from a technological and aesthetic perspective,” says president Dennis Boyd. “The highly attractive Synchrony beds include many of our patented and patent-pending features in a specialty line that offers adjustable comfort and support, all under the familiar and respected Thomasville consumer brand.”
KINGSDOWN
Kingsdown Inc. has developed major innovations in the air bed segment in recent years with the introduction of two different active technology sleep systems. It first unveiled the Sleep Smart Intuitive, a hybrid comprised of wrapped coils, high grade luxury foams and different high quality air bladder systems. Designed to change with the consumer’s physical changes and comfort needs, the Intuitive model (which retails for $9,999 in queen on an adjustable base) diagnoses a sleeper and understands what support and pressure relief levels are necessary for optimal comfortable. The sleep system’s technology intuitively learns its sleeper and continually adjusts itself to their changing positions while keeping the body in proper alignment, even if the sleeper experiences weight changes or other orthopedic issues. This combination creates an improved night’s sleep with fewer sleep interruptions.
For retailers and consumers looking for a step down from the Intuitive, Kingsdown also developed a sister bed called the Progeny. This high quality air bladder and foam sleep system provides consumers with the ability to manually adjust the bed’s support and pressure relief capabilities in accordance to the preferred or recommended setting. Like the Intuitive model, Progeny can also be manually adjusted to the changes of its sleeper’s anatomy, but retails for $4,500 in queen on a flat base.
COMFORTAIRE
Comfortaire has been manufacturing air beds and delivering Individualized Sleep Experiences for over 30 years. The company’s unique mattress construction has been developed to better provide the three key elements of sleep: support, posture, and comfort. Comfortaire Beds are made with a Dynamic Support system, a patented box top design that includes a static base support layer, a low profile air chamber and a plush surface comfort layer.
This innovative design positions the air at the surface and extends it all the way to the edges of the mattress, to provide uniform support and eliminate surface pressure. Dual air chambers allow partners to adjust their side of the mattress to their own individualized needs with a remote control, while the WF6200 air pump provides unmatched air pressure retention, better inflation, and programmable memory settings to ensure a better comfort range. With beds that range from the introductory Original Comfort Collection to the luxury, adjustable Elite Comfort lineup, Comfortaire makes innovative air technology available for a wide variety of consumer price points.
