Inspired to bring the powerful benefits of traditional Japanese indigo-dyed fabrics into the modern age, a new company, Aizome Bedding, is introducing an organic bed linen line that combines old techniques with a new, modern approach to deliver a healthier sleep. The company’s products are environmentally friendly and are produced without using toxic chemical dyes that can irritate the skin and lead to potential health problems.
In Japan, samurai warriors often wore indigo-dyed shirts under their armor. The Japanese valued indigo-dyed material for its magnificent color and its ability to help heal wounds, repel insects, reduce inflammation and prevent infection. The word “aizome” refers to the art of using naturally fermented indigo to pigment high-quality organic cotton in a completely synthetic-free process.
By reviving this tradition and using the leaves of the Asian indigo naturalis plant to create a unique color and infuse each product with the plant’s medicinal properties, the new Aizome brand combines the natural dying process with ultrasound technology to reduce its environmental impact and use 200 times less water than chemical dyes. The company also uses waste-water to fertilize fields.
“Most people think their skin is an impenetrable barrier, but it absorbs a lot of what we touch through a process called dermal absorption,” said Michel May, founder of Aizome Bedding. “Now consider that a third of an average person's life is spent in bed. That represents a lot of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals such as azo dyes, phthalates, formaldehyde or flame retardants (PBDEs) used in the production of the average set of pillowcases, sheets, and comforters, which can be absorbed through the skin and processed in the kidneys and liver, causing potential lasting damage. You don’t have to worry about any of this with our natural indigo dye. The Japanese have done this for millennia.”
Another key aspect of Aizome Bedding’s product is its use of organically sourced GOTS certified cotton fabric that has not been grown with any toxic chemicals, pesticides or GMOs. The effective combination of the natural indigo dye and organic cotton provides Aizome bedding with hypoallergenic qualities, eliminating dust, detritus, oil and dust mites from building up in a sleeping environment.
Aizome Bedding was launched by a team of Japanese and international healthcare professionals and textile experts who were concerned with the negative dermatological health effects and environmental impact of the chemical textile industry. Aizome Bedding aims to provide a viable alternative while promoting wellness, better sleep, healthy skin and a cleaner environment.
Aizome products are set to retail at $140 -220 depending on item size.
