5 Trends from the 2015 Fall High Point Market

Over the years High Point has become a more specialized market for bedding manufacturers—and this fall was no different. This time around we found a smattering of strategic launches and collection enhancements. From a variety of new youth line-ups to a number of creative add-on accessories, many manufacturers are expanding into new market categories. As bedding sales often slow during the last quarter of the year, these introductions offer retailers valuable opportunities to increase each individual sale as the year comes to a close. We also saw new interpretations of trends that have been steadily building momentum over the past few months, including hybrid mattresses and tactical marketing partnerships. With the excitement already building for a number of major winter introductions, our trip to North Carolina was marked by more in-depth discussions of future plans and campaigns—and it’s safe to say that 2016 is going to be a big one!

Here are the top trends we saw at market:

1 Youth Collections

In the recent past, the prevailing philosophy regarding children’s bedding has been to keep it basic and affordable. However, a number of bedding companies are specifically looking at the category differently and determined to make quality, healthy sleep available to the entire family. Focusing on well-made products that reflect the thought and attention that goes into creating adult bedding accessories, we saw solution-based sleep options for the smaller set.  By providing these niche items in concert with their selection of adult-focused products, retailers can offer one-stop family shopping, increase revenues and possibly create brand loyalty at the very earliest stages of life.

PureCare Kids

PureCare Kids

PureCare has launched a comprehensive line-up of children’s pillows, protectors and sheets. Developed after many months of careful design, the PureCare Kids collection offers four growth-and-wellness focused youth pillows, custom-fitting antibacterial silver treated pillow protectors and pillowcases, and a five-sided mattress protector. Unlike many companies who simply resize adult sleep products, PureCare specifically created all of these products to meet the unique health and comfort needs of growing children.

Bedgear has taken its advanced technology and applies it to two new youth-focused colletions: bedgear BABY and BG-X. Featuring technologies like Dri-Tec and Ver-Tec, the bedgear BABY line features crib sheets and mattress protectors that offer the same performance features of the original bedgear line, but tailored for children. The BG-X assortment includes three colorful, kid-friendly pillow designs that all boast Dri-Tec moisture and heat management fabric, as well as a blended BOOST foam structure that encourages bounce-free, deeper sleep.

Three Happy Coconuts

Three Happy Coconuts

Three Happy Coconuts, the newest addition to the Palmpring USA family, was founded by Palmpring CEO Camilla Kim out of concern for her two young daughters’ health. She aimed to create a safe, chemical-free environment for children to get the quality sleep they need. Geared towards the whole family with an emphasis on the smallest members, the Three Happy Coconuts line is comprised of two mattress styles, two pillows, one pillow topper, one crib mattress and a mattress especially designed for an adjustable base.  As with the products of its parent company, all Three Happy Coconuts items use certified organic materials throughout, not just in exterior components.

2 Brand Partnerships

We’ve previously noted the growing number of brand collaborations within the bedding industry—but it looks like strategic partnerships have become an essential marketing decision for many independent manufacturers. By aligning themselves with another reputable brand (whether it be a public figure, hotel or retailer), these companies are successfully creating new ways to showcase their product’ benefits and reach a wider consumer base.

Dr-James-Maas

Dr. James Maas

Paramount Sleep understands the importance educating consumers about quality sleep—but it also knows how challenging it can be for RSAs to communicate the most important details and features of a product in-store. In order to simplify the selling process, the company has teamed up with Dr. James Maas, an internationally recognized authority on sleep and performance. With an official “Sleep Doctor Recommended” stamp on its beds, this partnership helps retailers share key insights about how its products solve major sleep issues—and offers substantial, scientific evidence to back up the claims.

3 New Hybrid Models

Proving to be much more than just a buzzword, hybrids are still making a major impact on bedding sales. Appealing to a wide range of consumers who are looking for the “best of both worlds,” hybrids combine the support of traditional innerspring with the contouring comfort of specialty materials. But today’s hybrid models are not the same as the ones we were first introduced to many years ago. No longer relegated to mattresses exclusively, the concept has made its way to accessories as well—as manufacturers couple a variety of performance components within one product. As the hybrid design continues to drive retail sales, manufacturers are developing their own unique take with new components and combinations—allowing for more advanced personalization.

REM-Fit REST gel top pillow

REM-Fit REST Gel-Top Pillow

Protect-a-Bed has been steadily expanding its REM-Fit active lifestyle brand since its introduction—and the latest additions are three new REM-Fit REST hybrid pillows. Available in Micro Fiber Fill, Memory Foam or Gel Top Memory Foam, all three pillow models allow the sleeper to add or remove the soft micro-fill core or the Support Cluster inner filling to accommodate their preferred sleeping style. Each one also incorporates innovative technologies that regulate body temperature and wick away moisture. Touting a variety of performance and comfort features, the new REM-Fit REST Hybrid Pillows are highly personalized bedding solutions that promote healthy sleep for all.

Gold Bond has bolstered the unique comfort feel of its latex Brilliance Collection with a new hybrid model. Made with two inches of the eco-friendly Vytex Organic latex material, the new model offers a more breathable, cooler sleep environment. The innerspring system was designed with more than 800 encased coils to maximize support and reduce motion transfer. The finishing touch is a premium stretch knit cover made from Tencel to further enhance the bed’s temperature-regulation capabilities. By creating a hybrid model from eco-friendly, cooling components, the new Brilliance HYBRID combines a number of in-demand features to provide retailers with a truly unique selling story.

4 High-Quality Components

Due in part to high-profile marketing campaigns and unavoidable Internet chatter, it can feel as if the demand for cheap bedding is higher than ever. While it’s true that there are more value-oriented products on the market today, the trends seem to be swinging the opposite way as well—with more manufacturers investing in and spotlighting their commitment to high-quality components and craftsmanship. Although the lure of “fast-fashion” convenience is appealing to some, the promise of long-lasting comfort is still important to many consumers.

Eastman House

Hand-Tufting an Eastman House Mattress

Eastman House has prided itself on handcrafting ultra-premium mattresses for over 150 years. 5 Unique Add-On Purchases

In an effort to increase profits and boost customer patronage, many retailers are investing in unique accessories that can be sold in conjunction with existing offerings. Not only can these various add-on purchases nicely augment a retailer’s main line-up of products, but many of them work perfectly for sales promotions and holiday gifting, while also allowing consumers to purchase everything they need for the ultimate sleep experience in one location.
