Q&A: Individual Comfort

As technology continues to become more sophisticated, bedding manufacturers are able to offer products that adjust to the sleeper’s habits and comfort levels to create a personalized sleep experience.

How do you develop products to better enhance and personalize comfort?

Martin Rawls Meehan ReverieAt Reverie, customization isn’t a luxury add-on; it’s a part of each and every product we create. We design our mattresses and adjustable bases to enable personalization rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

We start with a basic idea—while quality mattresses are designed to last years, consumers certainly aren’t the same over that time period! Their bodies and sleep patterns are changing and consumers can benefit from a mattress that will change with them. That’s why our mattresses are designed with patented, moveable Dream Cells that allow for continued firmness adjustment. Customization alleviates pressure points in shoulders, hips and back. It also allows couples to personalize their side of the bed.

We’re also creating products with both sleep and lifestyle in mind. Customization isn’t only about the mattress and foundation, it’s about sleep accessories too. For Reverie, that means creating the industry’s first app for tablets and smart phones so consumers can adjust the bed using their own device once they download the app through Apple iTunes and Google Play. Most recently, we added a USB outlet to our remote stand for easy charging of mobile devices and added a built-in nightlight to our Made for Mobile module. Other features like our 3-in-1 legs let customers change the height of the bed over time to fit changing lifestyle or décor needs.

Consumers don’t want a passive, static product. They want a bed that will adjust to relieve their pressure and pain, help their partner to stop snoring and be comfortable whether they’re working, reading or sleeping.

Tempur Pedic Patrice VarniJPGOur research identifies personalization and, as has always been the case, supportive comfort, as the most important issues on customers’ minds today.

Time and time again, we hear that couples endure a poor night’s rest trying to balance each other’s differing sleep preferences. As a solution, we created the TEMPUR-Choice Collection. Both TEMPUR-Choice Luxe and TEMPUR-Choice Supreme provide adjust-ability on each side of the bed, so individuals can choose from a soft to a medium-firm feel. Multiple individually controlled zones offer support under the head, lower back and leg area for all-around comfort with a choice of 120 settings—six times the settings in other adjustable support beds. And most importantly, deep comfort layers of TEMPUR material ensure that TEMPUR-Choice mattresses target pressure points for less tossing and turning and less motion transfer overall, delivering the undisturbed, truly restorative sleep.

Studies show that people are spending more time in their bed. With this transition, comes the specific need for more customized, ergonomic support. Our new TEMPUR-Ergo Premier Adjustable Base allows individuals to control an unlimited number of rest positions, which increases comfort, improves relaxation, helps breathing and relieves stress on the finicky lower back. The base also delivers a rejuvenating massage available in four intensity levels for the lumbar head and leg areas. Compatible through Apple iOs and Android devices, customers have a second option for controlling the base. This level of personalization is compatible with all Tempur-Pedic mattress styles, so individuals can get the comfort they need along with the adjustability they crave.

Frank Hood KingsdownIt’s Kingsdown’s commitment to the science of sleep that has helped us to create the most individualized sleep surfaces available in the industry.

We recently introduced our new Sleep Smart sleep system as the first “interactive” sleep experience. Sleep Smart mattresses are designed to monitor movements, understand pain, ease pressure, track sleep patterns, and even gently wake a sleeper from a deep sleep. Our S.M.A.R.T sensors automatically trigger air cylinders that slowly expand or contract for optimal comfort and support. We take that a step further by providing an optional Sleep Smart app, which allows sleepers to create a personal profile. By using that app and our built-in data tracking, we’re also prompting consumers to take an active role in their own sleep progression.

That focus on personalization is nothing new for Kingsdown. For years we’ve been helping our dealers match consumers with the best bed for their body type with bedMATCH. It has effectively changed the way people shop for a mattress because it takes the guesswork out of the shopping process.

Of course, we also know that couples have different body types—that’s why years ago we developed our My Side line certified by Sleep to Live. There’s no compromising necessary. Couples can customize their beds by selecting the firmness level that’s best for them.

Kingsdown’s research arm, the Sleep to Live Institute, is our state-of-the-art research center that works with engineers and scientists dedicated to advancing the science of sleep and the health and well-being of consumers.

We want to create an entirely new way to think about sleep. We believe that a bed can and should play an active roll in helping consumers to achieve the best night’s sleep possible. Customization isn’t the wave of the future, it’s something we’ve been offering for years.
