Vispring announces the unveiling of its new Gate headboard, the result of an exclusive collaboration with multi-award-winning interior designer Staffan Tollgård. Introduced to the industry as a prototype at London’s Decorex in September, the design garnered such positive response that Vispring is now making it available to customers in the United States.
Born and raised in Stockholm, Tollgård’s passion for story-telling manifested itself first in a degree from Bournemouth film school and then a career in feature film development. Having settled in London, he renovated his first home and enrolled at Inchbald School of Design shortly afterwards in 2003. In 2005, he opened his eponymous design studio and was quickly recognized as one of the top ten designers to watch by industry insiders, IdFX Magazine. In 2009, he made the list of 100 leading designers in House & Garden’s prestigious directory. And in 2010 Tollgård opened a design studio in the Algarve, working on a variety of contemporary new builds, one of which was awarded Best Residential Property in 2012 by the International Property Awards.
Vispring and Tollgård developed their relationship in advance of Decorex, and based on their philosophical synergies, resolved to create a one-off design together. Tasked with finding inspiration for the new headboard, Tollgård needed to look no further than the beautifully pastoral location of Vispring’s factory in Plymouth, England.
“I looked to Vispring’s home for inspiration and found myself spoilt for choice,” Tollgård explained. “Gate has been inspired by the local environment and surroundings in Devon–the headboard emulates the wooden fences and gates that envelop the many neighbouring cattle and sheep farms. Straight lines with simple functions often lead to the most satisfying products.”
As with all Vispring beds, skilled craftsmen constructed the Gate headboard by hand in Plymouth, using all-natural materials.
“An exclusive collaboration with a name such as Staffan’s, a designer who’s been named in the leading 100 designers in French Architectural Digest, is always an exciting way to usher in the New Year,” expounded Vispring North American Head of Sales, Hugh Landes. “The headboard is both fresh and traditional in a way that we think will particularly appeal to our many custom-minded clients.”
Of the partnership, Tollgård said: “I love working with people who represent the best of what they do. Vispring and I share a passion for perfection. This, coupled with the brand’s exceptional heritage, was a perfect starting point. When I think of my signature style, I often mention the Scandinavian concept of the Red Thread running through a project, the creative DNA that makes a design entirely its own. My Red Thread is often very simple but is always centred around the best materials and techniques— this is reflected perfectly by Vispring, which prides itself on its craft and the use of the finest natural materials available.”
“Staffan is a consummate professional,” noted Mike Meehan, Vispring’s Managing Director. ”And his approach to design is inspiring. We feel the contemporary styling of Gate will particularly appeal to our North American clientele, who want a new twist on the classic Vispring tradition.”
